Once you've made the decision to take the IELTS, PTE, or a similar English exam for your study or immigration visa, the initial question that arises is: When should I schedule my exam? And how much preparation time do I require?

Let us help you in breaking it down.

Getting ready for the IELTS exam might feel overwhelming, particularly for individuals who are unfamiliar with the test or have minimal exposure to the English language.

A frequently asked question among test-takers is, "What's the ideal preparation duration for the IELTS?" The answer hinges on several factors outlined in this email.

Here are some steps you can take to prepare for the IELTS test:

  1. Learn about the IELTS test format by reading the IELTS information booklet and practicing with sample tests. When you book your appointment for exam, IDP or British Council will send you a booklet with information and few sample tests. They may also give free access to some materials online. But if you haven't booked your test yet, you can get details from their websites easily.

  2. Take a sample test or mock test for each section. May be one section per day depending on your schedule. Start with Listening test, then Reading, Writing and Speaking mocks. Try to finish this on a weekend or max in a week. This should tell you what are your strengths and weaknesses in each language skill.

  3. If your language proficiency is already where it needs to be, you could likely prepare for the IELTS within 6 to 8 weeks (studying 2-3 hours per day), Just focus on understanding the test and practicing it.

  4. Now you know your present level. If you're currently at a Band 6 level and aiming for Band 7, you'll need to put in a significant effort to enhance your language skills. You can get some idea on how many hours you may need to achieve your level by reading this article.

  5. As per the table in above article, you may need to put around 150-200 hours to reach to next level, that is around 7 to 8 hours per week for 6 months or 15 to 20 hours a week for 3 months.

  6. Create a Study plan based on above information for your skill levels.

  7. Enhance your reading and writing abilities by using real-life materials like newspapers, magazines, and academic articles. Improve your listening skills by tuning in to English podcasts and watching TV shows and movies in English.

  8. EssayChecker helps you in finding your weakness in Writing skills. Our Listening app has audio with transcripts which are highlighted automatically with audio. This helps specifically if you are working on listening skills.

  9. We have lot of practice materials also available for each section of exam. Practice as much as possible in your planning.

  10. Time management is very crucial so work on that part if you have difficulty in certain language skills. Our mock tests are timer based to help you with that.

Best Luck for your preparation.
